# 21 restaurants and takeaways in Groningen and Leeuwarden have a website run by Thuisbezorgd

We looked at the websites of 629 restaurants and takeaways in the municipalities of Groningen and Leeuwarden. We found a site for 526 of them. 21 of those are a Thuisbezorgd minisite: a site with the restaurant's name in the address that runs on Thuisbezorgd and where you order through Thuisbezorgd. On another 43 sites, something was wrong that a visitor notices straight away.

- **629**restaurants and takeaways checked

## What is a Thuisbezorgd minisite?

A minisite is a small website that Thuisbezorgd builds for a restaurant on its platform, with the restaurant's name in the address, often in the form name-town.nl. It shows the menu, the opening hours and an order button, and that order goes through Thuisbezorgd. According to [Koninklijke Horeca Nederland](https://khn.nl/kennis/maak-je-gebruik-van-thuisbezorgd-let-op-bestaan-van-minisite-met-jouw-bedrijfsnaam), the Dutch hospitality association, the minisite is part of the contract with Just Eat Takeaway, the company behind Thuisbezorgd, and many owners don't know this. KHN points out that more orders through Thuisbezorgd also means paying more commission.

We found 21 minisites: 16 in Groningen and 5 in Leeuwarden. All of them run on Takeaway.com's servers. For 16 of them, the register of .nl domains lists Takeaway.com as the party handling the registration; the oldest dates from 2012. The register does not publicly show whose name the address is in.

## So doesn't such a restaurant have its own site?

Half of them do, half of them don't. 11 of the 21 restaurants have their own website next to the minisite. There are then two addresses with the same name, and a customer searching for them can't tell which one is the real one. The other 10 only have the minisite: anyone who looks up their name and orders online ends up at Thuisbezorgd.

In OpenStreetMap, the open map that many apps take their data from, the minisite is listed as the restaurant's website for all 21 of them.

## How can you tell whether your site is a minisite?

- Open your site and click order. If you end up at Thuisbezorgd, or Takeaway.com's terms are at the bottom of the page, it is very likely a minisite.
- Look up your domain name in the [SIDN whois](https://www.sidn.nl/whois), the register of .nl domains. If Takeaway.com is listed as the reseller, Thuisbezorgd handles the registration.

- If you don't want it: KHN advises asking Just Eat Takeaway in writing to remove it. Ask at the same time what happens to the domain name, and whether you can take it over with a [transfer code](https://modexsoftware.nl/en/articles/glossary/#verhuiscode).

## What do the other sites run on?

Almost half of the sites run on WordPress. After that come sites we couldn't link to a system, and Sitedish, an ordering system for takeaways that also provides the whole site.

What the 526 sites we found run on

| System | Sites | Notes |
|---|

| WordPress | Sites239 | Notes45.4% of all sites |

| Custom-built or not recognised | Sites153 | NotesNo fixed traces of a known system |

| Ordering system with a site | Sites60 | NotesThe ordering system also provides the site; 59 of these are Sitedish |

| Website builder | Sites31 | NotesWix, Squarespace, Jimdo, Webflow or Shopify |

| Thuisbezorgd minisite | Sites21 | NotesRuns on Takeaway.com's servers |

| Didn't load | Sites22 | NotesSystem could not be determined |

To place an order, 74 homepages send their visitors to Sitedish, 23 to another ordering system (such as Foodticket, Orderli or Cashdesk), and 9 with a site of their own still send them to their page on Thuisbezorgd.

## What problems did we come across?

On 43 of the 526 sites, 1 in 12, something was wrong that a visitor sees straight away. A site that doesn't work properly costs orders: someone who is hungry just tries the next place.

- **18 sites don't load.** The address doesn't respond or no longer exists. Sometimes the restaurant has closed and the map is out of date; often the site has simply been forgotten.
- **On 10 sites, the browser shows a warning.** The security certificate has expired or belongs to a different address, and the browser reports that the connection is not secure.

- **6 ordering sites show an error page.** The address is still on the map, but the ordering site behind it no longer exists.
- **9 sites aren't made for phones.** On a phone you see a shrunken desktop page that you have to zoom in on.

## How we measured

- We took every named restaurant and takeaway (chip shops, pizzerias, shawarma places and the like) from OpenStreetMap within the municipalities of Groningen and Leeuwarden. We left out 51 branches of chains such as McDonald's and Subway, which left 629 independent businesses.
- If the map didn't list a website, we tried a few obvious addresses, such as name.nl and name-town.nl. Such an address only counts if the restaurant's name appears on the page. For 103 businesses we found no site; that doesn't mean they don't have one, because the map is incomplete.

- For each site, we requested the homepage the way a visitor does, and read the nameservers and the page itself: which system, where you order, a valid certificate and a setting for phone screens (viewport). For the minisites, we also checked the SIDN register and looked for a second address of their own.
- We then checked every site with a problem again separately, with the same certificate check a browser does. Sites that turned out to belong to a different business were dropped.

- Everything was measured on 17 October 2026, from one location in the Netherlands. Nothing was tested or tried: we only read what any visitor gets to see.
